I love how versatile this design is; depending on where you make the small cuts, you can create countless variations.
It’s a wonderful way to express your own creativity!

What You’ll Need

First, you’ll need origami paper, scissors, and glue.

You don’t need anything special.

Folding Instructions

First, make some folds.

Fold it into a square twice, then fold it into a triangle twice.

Unfold it, then fold the top and bottom corners toward the center.

Unfold it again.

　　

Next, fold the top and bottom corners along the creases you just made.

From here on, it’s like rolling it up.

Fold the small triangle that appears along the crease.

Next, align it with the center line and fold it.

Next, fold along the dotted line, passing through the center point.

Be sure to keep the right angle in mind at all times.

Do the same on the other side.

Pull the part marked with a circle toward you to open it.

　　

Surprisingly, a pentagon appears.

Next, fold this pentagon along the dotted lines.

Now a triangle appears.

Fold the other side in the same way.

　　

Once you’re done with the other side, it will look like a pentagon.

Fold two cranes

I’ve laid the pentagon on its side.

Fold the top and bottom triangles inward.

Then, fold along the blue dotted line toward the opposite side.

Next, make two creases.

Fold each one like this.

If you fold along the dotted line, you’ll get a small triangle.

Then, open it out to the left and right and fold it.

A small square will appear.

Use this square to make a crane.

Fold the large triangle on the left over it to form a pentagon.

Fold the other side in the same way.

Let’s turn this small square into a crane.

First, make a crease and open it up.

Fold it over and make a cut.

This cut will determine the direction the crane faces.

You can make the cut on the right side if you prefer, or on both sides.

If you make cuts on both sides, you’ll also get a tail.

Make the neck, and it’s done.

Open up the marked area and apply glue.

And that’s it—it’s finally finished.

As you can see, square boxes are cute too.

Fold it upward, then bring the left triangle over to the right.

Then unfold it into a square.

Make a crease and open it up.

You’ll see that it’s divided into two halves, top and bottom.

Finally, fold it into a basic paper crane, and you’re done.

Pattern 3

Finally, here’s how to fold a two-color crane using the opposite corner.

First, fold the top and bottom corners toward the center.

Next, fold the left and right corners toward the back.

Unlike previous folding methods,

you can fold this one without worrying about the orientation.

From here on, just fold it the same way as a basic origami crane.

An Arrangement of “Kotobuki-crane”

For the first arrangement, I folded the three corners backward.

It then looked like a sunrise.

The second one was made by skipping the fine folds.

This one looks a bit like the shuttlecock of a traditional Japanese game.

Third, I used double-sided tape to secure the pleat in the center.

It looks like a gift tag, and I really like it.

First, fold it into a square twice.

Unfold it, then fold it into a triangle twice.

Open along the fold line in the center of the triangle to form a square.

Flip it over, open the other side, and form a square.

Place the fluttering side facing down.

Fold one layer up.

Fold along the dotted line.

Fold it in half again.

Fold the other side the same way.

Turn over.

Fold it in half lengthwise to form the neck and tail.

Just fold the beak, and you’re done.

By the way, the one on top is a box crane, and the one on the bottom is a paper crane.

I made these using the same 15 cm × 15 cm sheet of origami paper.

There’s quite a difference in size.

Make a cut in the origami.

The part that connects will vary depending on which direction you fold.

In any case, we recommend using thicker origami paper.

I accidentally cut off just one feather.

I thought it would be safer to cut without making the slits too deep, weave it together first, and then make additional slits later.

Of course, since the slits are shallow, it does make it harder to fold.

I folded it using origami paper that is red on one side and yellow on the other.
In this case, the envelope has a yellow background.

First, fold it in half vertically to form a triangle.

If you open it up, fold it in half horizontally, and mark only the center, it will fold neatly.
