They’re so easy to make and cute that I ended up folding a whole bunch of them.

Here, we are using four 7.5 cm × 7.5 cm sheets of origami paper.

First, make the box lid, and then make the box bottom.

Fold it again along the crease.

Unfold the crease.

Next, flip it over again and form the corners as you open it up.

Now the piece is ready.

Shape it like this.

Choose your favorite color, then fold it three more times.

Assemble the box lid components

Now that you’ve folded it into quarters, let’s connect the pieces.

Here, look at the corner indicated by the white arrow.

Insert the flat side indicated by the red arrow into this corner.

First, insert the light blue flat piece into the pink corner.

Make sure it goes all the way in.

This is the third piece.

Place the flat pink piece into the light blue corner.

Next, here’s the fourth piece.

Finally, connect the first and fourth parts.

Next, use that mark as a guide to fold the paper.

Fold the left corner down sharply.

Fold the long rectangle on the right so that it lies against the triangle.

Fold the triangle back once, then tuck it into the crease on the right.

Fold along the dotted line.

The part is complete.

Make four of these parts.

Assemble the parts

Next, I’ll start assembling it, so I’ve laid out the four pieces.

They look just like four fish.

So I decided to add some eyes.

Like this, I’ll assemble them so it looks as if the fish are eating each other’s tails one after another.

In practice, you combine these four parts like this.

Next, lower the triangle counterclockwise.

Finally, slide it into the gap.

And that’s it!

And the fish all came together in harmony.

Make the lid for the box

Next, let’s make the lid.

Earlier, we folded the paper so that the edges met in the middle,

but this time, we’ll fold it about 2–3 millimeters short of the center to create the piece.

This will result in a slightly larger lid.

As you can see, by changing the initial width, you can freely adjust the height.

This is all it takes to easily change the size.

Here’s a guide on how to fold a cross-shaped box.
I discovered that there’s a box that matches the cross-shaped envelope, and I wanted to make one, so I searched high and low.
But I couldn’t find any instructions on how to fold it.

I gave up, thinking there was no other way, but after a while, I started worrying that I really wanted to try folding it after all.
So, I decided to try folding it myself.
After all, this box actually exists.

I figured if I tried hard enough, I could probably fold it.
It wasn’t easy, though.
I managed to pull it off, but I wonder if there isn’t a slightly simpler way to fold it.

There are a lot of folds, so it might be a little confusing.
Still, I’d be happy if you enjoy this origami project.

The box on top has a cross on it,
and the white one below is an envelope with a cross on it.

Folding Instructions

Make a crease

First, fold it into a square.

Next, connect the corner to the center mark to create a crease.

Make a crease from the top right as well.

Turn it over and fold the top triangle toward the back.

Then, fold along the dotted line.

Do not fold the triangle you just made.

Open this triangle downward.

Next, fold the bottom corner along the edge.

Flip it over and fold the other side in the sOnce you’ve folded both sides, fold the edges toward the center.

Again, do not crease the paper into a triangle at this stage.

Once you’ve folded both sides, fold the edges toward the center.

Again, do not crease the paper into a triangle at this stage.

Make the same fold vertically as well.

The dotted square represents the bottom of the box.
The white lines represent the corners of the box.

Make a cross-shaped fold

Turn it over, then fold the triangle along the bottom line.

Fold along the line connecting the corner of the origami paper to the corner of the box.
Fold it so that it aligns with the base of the triangle.

Then, fold along the line at the bottom of the box, making sure the triangle doesn’t extend beyond the edge.

Make this fold on the remaining corners as well.

Fold the line that forms the corner of the box upward.

Let’s shape it into a box

First, fold the base box.

Fold the corners of the box you just folded.

I’ve just folded the corners of the box.

Here is a side view.
Fold the pointed corners along the creases.
Then, align the next small corner so that it overlaps the previous one.

Then fold the next pointed corner, followed by the small corner, and repeat this process.

I’ve just folded the third corner.
Fold the fourth corner in the same way, but attach it to the first corner.

Here is the finished cross-shaped box.

Test fold

The box on the left was folded using the method I described.
The box on the right was made before I learned that folding technique.
There’s a hole in the center, so you can see inside.
I thought it might be okay as is, but I decided to put in a little more effort.

A small square will appear.

Use this square to make a crane.

Fold the large triangle on the left over it to form a pentagon.

Fold the other side in the same way.

Let’s turn this small square into a crane.

First, make a crease and open it up.

Fold it over and make a cut.

This cut will determine the direction the crane faces.

You can make the cut on the right side if you prefer, or on both sides.

If you make cuts on both sides, you’ll also get a tail.

Make the neck, and it’s done.

Open up the marked area and apply glue.

And that’s it—it’s finally finished.

As you can see, square boxes are cute too.

Plus, you can always turn them into cranes.

I made it out of 15-centimeter origami paper.

Make a crease

Let’s get started.

Fold it in half to form a square, then fold it in half again to form a triangle.
Next, fold the corners toward the center, then unfold them.

Turn it over and fold the bottom corner along the crease you just made.
Repeat this process with the remaining corners.

I’ll turn it over again.

Fold along the crease you just made, aligning it with the center line.
Next, fold the top and bottom corners together.

Fold along the center line.
Then, rotate it 90 degrees.

The shape is slightly different, but fold it the same way as before.
I think it will be easier to fold since there are markings to guide you.

Align the star markings and fold, then fold back along the center line.

Similarly, align the star marks and fold, then fold back along the center line.

Next, we’ll crease the parts that will form the lid of the box.

Then, fold along the center line.

Repeat this for all the corners.

Once you’ve folded it this far, flip it over.

Now, there’s just a little bit left to fold.

Unfold the origami paper, which has had many creases made in it so far.

First, fold both corners into this pointed shape and take a close look at the crease in between.
If you spot a triangle between the corners, you’ve got it.

Actually, I find it easier to fold if you only fold the side marked with a star.

Once you’ve made it a few times, you’ll get better at spotting the triangle.

Place the star-marked part against the corner.

Next, fold along the crease in the direction of the arrow to reveal the front side.
This will create a sharp corner.

Then, fold the sharp corner backward.
Folding this sharp corner will secure the crease.

Here’s a view from the back.

The corners are sharp, though you can’t see them from here.

Fold the pointed corner three more times so that it takes on this shape.

This is a view from above.
We’re almost there.

Fold along the crease, making a mountain fold and folding it toward the center, then make a valley fold at the tip and unfold it.
Continue folding the adjacent sections one after another.

Fold the last one the same way.

Then, slide one side into place next to the other and secure it.

And there you have it—your flower box is complete.
